Three knives that cover what a knife is actually for: a long straight blade for mixing on the slab and lifting a mix cleanly, a cranked trowel for laying colour onto a surface, and a small pointed blade for working into a corner and for scraping back a passage that has gone wrong.
The blades are hardened and tempered carbon steel, which flexes progressively along their length and springs back true. A stamped stainless blade is either rigid or floppy along its whole length and does neither job well.
The crank on the trowel matters more than it looks: it lifts your knuckles clear of the surface, so you can lay colour flat without dragging your hand through what you just put down.

- Composition
- Hardened and tempered carbon steel blades, hand-finished and unplated. Riveted, unlacquered ash handles with brass ferrules.
- Dimensions
- Straight mixing blade 105 mm; cranked trowel 62 mm; pointed detail blade 38 mm. Each 215–228 mm overall.
- Weight
- 42 g, 38 g and 31 g respectively; 111 g the set
- Finish & variation
- Blades hand-polished to a satin finish and left unplated. They will develop a grey patina with use, which is normal and passivating; orange spotting is rust and means one was put away wet.
- Made
- Forged, hardened and tempered in Sheffield, England, then hand-finished and handled in Arizona. Left unplated.
Care
- Wipe dry immediately after washing. Do not leave it wet on the bench.
- A light oil once a month if the studio is humid.
- Take spots off with fine wool and re-oil; do not use an abrasive pad.
Cautions
- Not stainless. Unplated carbon steel will spot with rust if it is put away wet — that is the trade for an edge that keeps.
- Not for a machine wash of any kind. The heat and detergent strip the finish and loosen the handle in the wood.
- Not a pry bar or a chisel. The blades are tempered to flex, and levering against a hard edge will take a set that does not come out.
