A 6 mm birch face on a 22 mm solid ash cradle. The cradle does two things: it keeps the panel flat against humidity, and it holds the face a finger's width off the wall so the finished work reads as an object rather than a sheet stuck up.
The ply is void-free, which is the specification that matters and the one usually left out. Ordinary birch ply has gaps in its inner laminations; those gaps telegraph as soft spots under pressure and open up along a cut edge. Void-free costs more per sheet and is the difference between a panel that stays true and one that dishes in a year.
Corners are mitred and glued, not stapled. A stapled cradle is faster to make and it works loose exactly where the panel is handled most.

- Made
- Birch laminate cut, cradled and sanded in our own Arizona workshop. Cradles are solid ash, mitred and glued rather than stapled.
Care
- Store upright and separated, not face-to-face under weight.
- Seal both faces and all edges before working, or the panel will take up moisture unevenly.
- Keep out of a car in summer — heat cycling is what opens a glue line.
Cautions
- Not supplied primed. The face is sanded and ready for a ground, and it needs one — worked directly, the wood will discolour what you put on it.
- Not free of grain figure. Birch figure differs panel to panel and will read through a thin ground unless you build it up.
- Not guaranteed dead flat beyond the tolerance stated below. Wood moves with humidity and a cradle limits that, it does not abolish it.
