The same bristle, ferrule and handle as the Ashfield filbert, cut square and taken out to eighteen millimetres. A square head is the tool for covering a field fast and for cutting a hard straight edge against a mask — the two things a filbert deliberately will not do.
At eighteen millimetres it is the largest brush most people need indoors. It holds enough colour to cross a 16 × 20 panel in three or four strokes, which matters when a passage has to stay wet while you work it.

- Finish & variation
- Stiff, square-cut, with a chisel edge that sharpens as the head breaks in. Bristle colour varies batch to batch. Expect some shedding for the first several washes.
- Made
- Heads set and shaped in Bavaria, Germany, in a workshop that has made artists' brushes for four decades. Handles turned from ash in Arizona and assembled here.
Care
- Rinse in warm water while you work; wash properly at the end of a session.
- Wash with a plain soap, working the lather right up into the ferrule.
- Reshape the head with your fingers while it is still wet.
- Dry flat or hanging head-down. Never standing on the head.
Cautions
- Not for standing in water or solvent. It swells the ferrule crimp, splays the head permanently, and it is the single most common way a good brush is ruined.
- Not for scrubbing a dried film off a surface — that is what a scraper is for.
- Expect the head to shed a few bristles through its first several washes. That is the loose stock working out, not the brush failing, and it stops.
