The brush most of a working day goes through. A filbert is a flat with the corners rounded off, which means it lays a broad stroke like a flat and turns a soft edge like a round without you having to change tools. Twelve millimetres across the head is the size that covers ground quickly at arm's length and still puts an edge where you want it.
The bristle is hog, chosen because each hair splits naturally into two or three at the tip. Those splits are what hold and then release a heavy body colour — a synthetic of the same shape carries perhaps half as much and empties faster. The head is interlocked, meaning the natural curve of each bristle is set facing inwards so the head springs back to shape instead of splaying.
The ferrule is seamless nickel-plated brass, double-crimped. A seamed ferrule is cheaper and it is also where water gets in, swells the glue and lets the head loosen after a year. The handle is ash, turned and left unlacquered — it will grey and take on the marks of your hand, which is a finish wearing in rather than off.

- Stiff with a firm spring and a naturally split tip that leaves a slight rake in a loaded stroke. Bristle colour ranges from pale straw to grey between batches; the head softens permanently over the first month of use and that is the brush breaking in, not wearing out.

- Heads set and shaped in Bavaria, Germany, in a workshop that has made artists' brushes for four decades. Handles turned from ash in Arizona and assembled here.
Care
- Rinse in warm water while you work; wash properly at the end of a session.
- Wash with a plain soap, working the lather right up into the ferrule.
- Reshape the head with your fingers while it is still wet.
- Dry flat or hanging head-down. Never standing on the head.
Cautions
- Not for standing in water or solvent. It swells the ferrule crimp, splays the head permanently, and it is the single most common way a good brush is ruined.
- Not for scrubbing a dried film off a surface — that is what a scraper is for.
- Expect the head to shed a few bristles through its first several washes. That is the loose stock working out, not the brush failing, and it stops.
