A clutch holder takes a 2 mm lead and drops it by the length you want, which means the tool never gets shorter and never changes balance. A wooden pencil is a different object at 60 mm from the one it was at 176 mm; this one is the same on its last day as its first.
The barrel is knurled brass rather than aluminium, so it carries enough weight to draw with a loose grip. The clutch is a three-jaw steel mechanism; a two-jaw lets the lead rotate under pressure and skate.
Ships with one 2B lead. Sharpen on a sanding block or a rotary lead pointer — a pencil sharpener will not take it.

- Raw knurled brass, unlacquered. It will darken to a warm brown with handling and can be brought back with a metal polish if you would rather it stayed bright.

- Barrel and clutch machined in Nuremberg, Germany. Assembled and leaded in Arizona.
Care
- Use the pin in the push-button to clear graphite dust from the jaws every few months.
- Sharpen on a sanding block or a rotary pointer, never a pencil sharpener.
Cautions
- Not for 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm mechanical leads. This is a 2 mm clutch and nothing else fits.
- Not self-sharpening. It drops a blunt 2 mm rod; putting a point on it is a separate step and there is no way around that.
- Not for dropping. The brass barrel dents and the clutch jaws can be knocked out of alignment.
